The management of GKS recently filed charges against unknown. What exactly happened, and how do experts assess the case?
Unknown persons have hacked into an e-mail account at GKS. The management has filed charges against unknown.
GKS recently fell victim to a "criminal phishing attack". According to management, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has been informed. The BSI classified the attack as "not reportable." Nevertheless, according to GKS, charges have been filed against unknown.
What exactly happened? According to GKS, it all started with an email that was sent to the company. The email itself did not contain any malware and was therefore not immediately detected by the installed firewalls. As part of the attack, the email access data of an employee was stolen. Subsequently, emails were sent from this account without the employee's knowledge but in his name.
GKS also called in external IT specialists
After a few minutes, GKS detected and averted the attack. In-depth analyses, including those by external IT specialists, showed that the attackers had not penetrated the protected IT infrastructure any further. "The operation of GKS could be guaranteed at all times without impairment," the press release continues. The affected email recipients have been informed.
